ICU Day 2024
Every year, International Credit Union (ICU) Day brings together SACCOs and credit unions across the world to celebrate the power of cooperative finance in transforming lives. Since its inception in 1948, ICU Day has been observed annually on the third Thursday of October, highlighting the vital role that credit unions play in promoting financial inclusion, economic empowerment, and community development.
This year’s ICU Day was uniquely special as it was celebrated on Saturday, October 19th, under the inspiring theme:
"One World Through Cooperative Finance"
The theme underscored the global unity of SACCOs and the shared vision of financial institutions that prioritize people over profit, ensuring that communities have access to affordable and sustainable financial services.
Chapter 2 SACCOs Unite in Mchinji
For Central Region SACCOs (Chapter 2), including UN SACCO, the ICU Day celebrations took place at Mchinji Community Ground. The event was marked by a vibrant and engaging program that brought together SACCO members, leaders, and the community to celebrate the spirit of cooperative finance.
The day began with an energetic big walk from Mchinji Secondary School Turn-off to Mchinji Community Ground. The walk symbolized unity, financial empowerment, and the collective strength of SACCOs in driving economic and social development.
A Meaningful Contribution to Mchinji District Hospital
Beyond the celebrations, ICU Day also served as an opportunity for SACCOs to give back to the community. Recognizing the importance of accessible and well-equipped healthcare facilities, Chapter 2 SACCOs, including UN SACCO, made a remarkable donation of K9.8 million to Mchinji District Hospital.
The funds were specifically dedicated to the renovation of the Male Ward, an initiative aimed at improving healthcare services for the district’s residents. This generous donation reflects the core values of SACCOs—not just providing financial solutions but also making a tangible impact in communities.
A Day of Reflection, Celebration, and Commitment
The ICU Day celebrations in Mchinji were more than just an event; they were a reaffirmation of SACCOs’ mission to uplift communities through cooperative finance, social responsibility, and economic development.
UN SACCO remains committed to championing these values and ensuring that every member benefits from affordable financial services while contributing to meaningful community initiatives.
